Upward and Outward
Lately I’ve been listening to the audio book of The Count of Monte Cristo. In the story, Edmond Dantes is falsely accused and thrown into prison where he lives for fifteen long years. And that whole time he just has one tiny window to look out. One sliver of sky. I was thinking about that and about how hard it would be to be trapped in a place with such a limited view.
We all live like that to some extent—we can’t help it. We grow up in a particular family, on a particular street, in a particular neighborhood, and that accounts for so much of our view. But God is always calling our hearts upward and outward.
Upward first, because His love is the only thing that can fill our hearts to overflowing. And outward because He never intended that we should keep His love and kindness to ourselves.
Blessings to you this week. Ask God to expand your view and trust Him to do it.
