The Highest Hope
I hope for many things, both big and small. I hope for my children to be happy and healthy. I hope for good weather and convenient parking places, and for my yard to become significantly less messy.
Recently I was hoping to find a floor-length, formal black dress for an upcoming event. I found one, and as long as I eat lightly until then, I’ll be able to wear it, though I may have to hold my breath when I sit down.
A couple of months ago my daughter, Lillian, and I were talking about those times when things haven’t gone the way we’d hoped and prayed they would. I mentioned Psalm 61:2 which says, “From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.”
God is the rock that is higher, and because of Him, there is also a hope that is higher. When my earthly hopes fail me, which they often do, and disappointment and pain come flooding in, I take comfort in Him—the only One who never disappoints, but always holds. Nothing can pry me away from Him. He is my steady companion, my ever accessible friend, and trusted wise counselor. He is my highest hope for my children, and for my days here on earth.
Hebrews 1:3 describes Jesus as “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature.” No one before or since has ever been so perfectly good and kind, humble and courageous, gentle and strong, willing to confront and quick to forgive. This is our God. And this is why our highest hope will never be disappointed.
This week, if you find yourself disappointed by one of your earthly hopes, take comfort in your highest hope.
